Occidental Bank (Barbados) Ltd was incorporated on May 16, 1991 under the name of Union Bank (Barbados) Ltd with its main domicile in the Island of Barbados. Its single shareholder was Banco Unión Colombiano, which was incorporated on December 14, 1976 with its main domicile in Bogotá.
Banco Unión Colombiano originated as a branch of the Royal Bank of Canadá and 50 years later, became a mixed bank known as Banco Royal Colombiano. In 1988, some Colombian investors acquired the shares of the foreign partners and assumed the name Banco Unión Colombiano.
On October 2, 2006, Banco de Occidente acquired Banco Union Colombiano and its affiliate Union Bank (Barbados) Ltd.
On February 22, 2008 the affiliate of Banco de Occidente changed its corporate name from Union Bank (Barbados) Ltd to Occidental Bank (Barbados) Ltd.
